In this course, you will learn what social engineering means, the methods, tactics, and techniques used by cyber criminals to conduct social engineering attacks, and how to recognize a potential social engineering attack, specifically phishing and spear-phishing. You will also learn that the best defense against social engineering is employee awareness and how to conduct simulated social engineering attacks as part of employee training.

Upon successful completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Describe what is meant by “social engineering” and why it is a security concern
  • Describe several of the social engineering methods, techniques, and tactics used individually or in combination by cybercriminals
  • Recognize when a potential social engineering attack is occurring and what to do in response
  • Identify when a potential phishing or spear-phishing attack is occurring and what to do in response
  • Describe several training techniques that help employees have a heightened awareness of potential social engineering attacks
  • Identify one or two types of training exercises that simulate a social engineering attack, to further increase employee awareness
